Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Q & A

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

TMS is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation. It uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in your brain to increase activity and alleviate your symptoms.

Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., uses the BrainsWay® treatment platform for TMS therapy. This advanced tool provides deep TMS, triggering deeper and broader areas of your brain to get better results.

Am I a good candidate for TMS?

When you visit Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., for help managing your mental health condition, your experienced provider conducts an in-depth evaluation to determine the best treatment for you.

You may be a good candidate for TMS if traditional treatments for your mental health condition fail to alleviate your symptoms.

The BrainsWay treatment platform is currently FDA-cleared to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., also uses TMS to help those suffering from anxiety.

Researchers are also looking into the benefits of TMS therapy for other mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

What happens during TMS therapy?

Your provider at Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., conducts your TMS therapy at the office. During your first treatment, which may take up to an hour, your provider identifies the best placement of the magnetic coils and the appropriate dose of magnetic energy.

During therapy, you sit in a comfortable chair, and your provider places the magnetic coil helmet on your head. Then, they activate the device and increase the magnetic energy until they identify the most effective dose. You may feel a tapping or clicking sensation during this process.

After determining the dose and location, your provider creates your TMS therapy treatment plan.

How many TMS therapy treatments do I need?

The number of TMS therapy treatments you need depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, and response to therapy. To start, your provider at Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., recommends TMS therapy five days a week for up to six weeks.

Each follow-up TMS treatment takes only 20 minutes, and there’s no need for any downtime afterward.

Your provider also recommends you continue your psychotherapy and prescription medication while receiving TMS therapy.

Though results vary, many patients experience significant improvement or complete resolution of their symptoms following their initial TMS therapy sessions.
