Parkinson's Disease Q & A

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive nervous system disorder caused by the breakdown or death of certain nerve cells in the brain. Many of the nerve cells affected by Parkinson’s disease are responsible for producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in your ability to think, focus, and feel pleasure.

A decrease in dopamine production affects regular brain activity, which leads to the movement and mobility issues associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Genetics and environmental factors also play a role in the development of Parkinson’s disease.

What are Parkinson’s disease symptoms?

Parkinson’s disease symptoms vary from person to person. Initially, symptoms may be mild and go unnoticed. Symptoms usually start on one side of the body and tend to be worse on that side than the other.

Common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include:

  • Tremors that start in your fingers
  • Slow down in movement
  • Rigid muscles
  • Poor balance
  • Stooped posture
  • Loss of ability to control unconscious actions (blinking, smiling)
  • Soft or slurred speech
  • Difficulty writing

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, schedule an appointment at Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc, to get the answers you need.

How is Parkinson’s disease diagnosed?

No single test can diagnose Parkinson’s disease. The board-certified neurologists at Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., conduct in-depth evaluations to confirm or rule out Parkinson’s disease.

Your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, medical history, and family history during your assessment. Then, they conduct a physical and neurological exam.

Your provider may also request diagnostic tests such as a dopamine transporter scan (DaTscan) or blood tests.

How is Parkinson’s disease treated?

Parkinson’s disease treatment focuses on improving symptoms. Your provider may prescribe medications that increase dopamine levels and improve walking, movement, and tremors.

However, as Parkinson’s disease progresses, medications become less effective. Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The state-of-the-art practice uses the BrainsWay® treatment system, which provides deep TMS therapy.

During TMS therapy, your provider places a special helmet on your head that delivers pulses of magnetic energy to the areas of your brain affected by your Parkinson’s disease. The magnetic energy increases neural activity to improve symptoms.
