Migraines Q & A

What are migraines?

Migraines are a type of recurring headache that causes intense throbbing pain usually localized to one area of the head. The pain may last a few hours or a few days.

Though researchers are still investigating the underlying cause of migraine headaches, they theorize that the pain may occur due to an imbalance in brain chemicals caused by changes in how your trigeminal nerve interacts with your brainstem.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

Migraine symptoms vary in type and severity. But they usually develop in stages. Migraine symptoms stages include:

Prodrome

Before you feel the tell-tale pounding associated with migraines, your initial symptoms may include food cravings, mood changes, or stiffness in your neck. These are called prodrome symptoms.

Aura

An aura refers to the auditory or visual hallucinations you may experience before or during your migraine attack, such as zig-zag lines or ringing in the ears.

Attack

Attack refers to the throbbing pain you feel during your migraine.

Post-drome

The post-drome stage follows the attack and leaves you feeling drained and out-of-sorts.

Not everyone with migraines experiences each of the stages.

How are migraines treated?

Treatment for migraines may depend on the frequency and severity of your recurring headaches. In most cases, over-the-counter pain migraine medication helps decrease the severity and longevity of the migraine headache.

For those with frequent migraine headaches, medications may be prescribed to alleviate the number of migraines you have. Botox® injections may also be given to people with chronic migraines (15 or more migraines a month).

More recently, researchers have achieved positive results with TMS therapy for migraine sufferers. TMS therapy uses pulsed magnetic energy directed at specific areas of the brain, which alters neural activity to decrease migraine pain.

The team at Dymphna San Diego TMS, Inc., uses the BrainsWay® treatment platform for TMS therapy.
